American Airlines wants to add Brazil flights

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — American Airlines, which is operating under bankruptcy protection, is seeking permission to add more flights to Brazil.

The country's third-biggest airline said that it filed an application with the U.S. Department of Transportation for the right to fly 17 more weekly flights between the U.S. and Brazil later this year.

It currently runs more than 80 weekly flights to Brazil.

Chief Commercial Officer Virasb Vahidi said in a statement that Brazil is a growing market for American, with the company hoping to start running expanded service as early as Oct. 1.

If approved, American said it would add flights from its Miami and New York-JFK hubs to various Brazilian cities. This would include increasing service between JFK and Sao Paulo and Miami to Rio de Janeiro.

The company also wants to convert daily one-stop service from Miami to Recife-Salvador to non-stop flights five days a week between Miami and Recife and Miami and Salvador.

On Friday, American Airlines said that it was agreeing with creditors to consider potential mergers while it is still under bankruptcy protection.

American parent AMR Corp. said that the company and its bankruptcy creditors agreed to develop "potential consolidation scenarios," but that didn't mean it would pursue a deal with any particular party.

AMR is based in Fort Worth, Texas.
