Mexico Reports 4.99 Million Tourist Arrivals January-April

The Mexican Ministry of Tourism, which recently hosted the Love Mexico event in New York to promote destination weddings and honeymoon travel to the country, announced that 4.99 million international tourists visited Mexico between January-April 2012, representing an increase of 5.3 percent compared to the same period in 2011.
The U.S. remains Mexico’s biggest tourism market with 2.1 million American visitors arriving to Mexico by air January-April 2012. Following efforts to attract a more diverse cohort of tourists from a range of international markets, Mexico saw a significant increase in visitor numbers compared to the same period in 2011, especially from Argentina (up 27.4 percent), the U.K. (up 11.5 percent), Brazil (up 69.5 percent), Russia (up 71 percent), France (up 8.3 percent), Canada (up 2.2 percent) and Japan (up 18.4 percent).
Hotel occupancy in the 70 locations monitored by Datatur Jan. 1 to May 27, 2012, also saw a significant increase, rising 7 percent compared with the same period last year. Increased hotel occupancy rates have not only been reported in beach destinations like Puerto Vallarta (up 19.4 percent), Cancun (up 11.6 percent), Huatulco (up 11 percent) and Riviera Maya (up 7.6 percent), following efforts to promote a diversified tourism product, Mexico’s destinations have also seen rising occupancy rates in 2012.
In Monterrey hotel occupancy increased 12.1 percent from Jan. 1 to May 27, 2012, compared with the same period in 2011. Increases also were reported in Guadalajara (up 11.4 percent), Mexico City (up 7.8 percent), Guanajuato (up 7 percent), Queretaro (up 19.9 percent) and Leon (up 16.8 percent) compared with same period in 2011.
These figures follow a milestone year for Mexico tourism in 2011, when 23.4 million international travelers visited Mexico trumping the previous record set in 2008 and exceeding 23 million for the first time in history.
