CLIA Unveils New Specialty Cruise Collection Initiative

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) announced a CLIA Specialty Cruise Collection initiative, a program to “support and promote” small-vessel, river, coastal, luxury, adventure and sailing ship companies among its members.

CLIA will engage in marketing and public relations strategies, travel agent training and trade show representation intended to “heighten consumer awareness of the diversity of specialized cruise experiences,” according to a CLIA statement.

CLIA officials describe the category as represented by ships with capacities ranging from fewer than 100 to more than 1,000 passengers, and including adventure and river cruises, wind-powered and yacht-style luxury vessels, and stern paddlewheelers.

Specialty category itineraries feature longer voyages to international exotic destinations and coastal voyages in North America and Norway.

According to respondents of a July 2012 CLIA survey of CLIA-member travel agents, “specialized” cruise experiences represent from 5 to 45 percent of agents’ business, and is viewed as a “growing sales opportunity” by nearly 60 percent of respondents.

CLIA member lines that comprise the Specialty Cruise Collection include: AmaWaterways, American Cruise Lines, Avalon Waterways, Azamara Club Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Hurtigruten, Louis Cruises, Paul Gauguin Cruises, Seabourn, SeaDream Yacht Club, Silversea Cruises, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Windstar Cruises.
