World air travel up in January says IATA

Figures released yesterday by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) show that air travel rose by 8.2 percent this January compared to the same month in 2010. World travel has now rebounded, with people flying six percent more than at the last high point before the global economic recession.

January was also a much more successful month for airlines than December 2010, when flights across Europe and the USA had to be cancelled due to harsh weather conditions. Despite having only 68 percent of their flights full – the lowest amount anywhere in the world – African air travel also enjoyed a huge rise of 14.3 percent in the year-on-year figures.

The IATA did however warn that the traditionally successful regions of Egypt, Tunisia and Libya would undoubtedly suffer great loses in revenue due to the recent and ongoing political instability in the region. Emirates, Qatar and Etihad were still found to have performed strongly in the first month of this year, up 11 percent on January 2010.

Airlines in Latin American also reported 11 percent growth while demand for carriers in the Asia Pacific almost doubled with a rise from 2.8 percent to 5.8 percent from the month before. European carriers also enjoyed a rise of almost eight percent while those in North America scooped 8.5 percent.
