US Department of State Issues Mexico Travel Warning
March 22, 2010
Just recently, the United States Department of State issued yet more travel warnings for Mexico. These travel warnings go double for spring breakers who normally make a trip down to Mexico every year. On top of this, Oregon’s AAA has also issued its own warnings and advice on spring break travel about Mexico as well.
This time the warnings come due to heavy violence by Mexican drug cartels. They have been killing thousands in the last year throughout the country. A lot of this killing has been in towns located in the north. The Department of States said in their release that United States citizens should pay close attention to their surroundings while traveling in Ciudad Juarez. People should avoid isolated locations during late night and early morning hours. They should remain alert to all news reports.
The United States Department of States’ warnings largely involved the cites of Ciudad Jurez, Chihuahua City, Nogales, Matamoros, Reynosa and Monterrey. However, Acapulco has also been mentioned by other authorities. They say that, when in this area, tourists should stay in a one block area.
So far, other very popular destinations like Cabo and Cancun have yet to be mentioned in any of the warnings. Portland International Airport was full of travelers just this past week, and many of them were making their way to Mexico despite the warnings from the government. The airport is expecting 5,000 more passengers than usual each day during spring break.
The Director of Travel for AAA Oregon said that the recent violence in cities along the United States and Mexico border has raised concerns about the safety of travel. With spring break this month and summer travel just around the corner, the AAA advises all travelers to say informed about travel warnings issued by the United States government.
