In Canada, tourism is suffering its worst downturn since the 2003 SARS outbreak, part of a global trend as people hunker down in the face of economic uncertainty. We're not going on as many trips, and those we do take are shorter and closer to come.
But despite the doom, gloom and shelved plans, there are still deals to be had, as travel companies try to lure people back.
One hotel - the Westin St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands - is offering a Layoff Guarantee: Get laid off at least 15 days before you travel, and you can postpone your trip for up to a year. In recent weeks, Air Canada opened 250,000 extra seats to Aeroplan users BritRail offered one extra day of travel free to BritRail Pass buyers and New York City's tourism bureau announced a series of special offers to tourists
