Travel companies contribute to Haiti’s recovery
January 20, 2010

In the aftermath of Haiti’s strongest earthquake in 200 years, industries, companies, and individuals have banded together to combine efforts in helping victims. With a current death toll between 100,000 – 200,000, the disaster has been compared to both the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and New Orleans’ Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

As of Saturday afternoon, the American Red Cross has raised more than $87 million. Travel companies have also contributed a hand – and are helping their customers lend one, too. Most airlines have suspended commercial travel to Haiti and are now focusing on shipping supplies and making donations. See how you can donate to Haiti relief funds by checking in with your travel connections. Airlines, hotels, and online travel companies all over the globe have set initiatives to donate their time, equipment, and service to Haiti’s needs, and make it easy for their frequent fliers and members to help as well.

American Airlines: In conjunction with American Eagle, American Airlines is sending three flights to Haiti filled with 30,000 pounds of relief supplies, food and water.

Continental Airlines: Continental has set up a program for OnePass members to donate to relief groups, and is waiving change fees for passengers with prior tickets to the Dominican Republic.

Delta Air Lines: Delta allows its frequent fliers to donate miles to the American Red Cross for its transportation needs through its SkyWish Charities page.

JetBlue: While JetBlue doesn’t fly directly to Haiti, the airline will bring relief workers from agencies to the Dominican Republic, and is working with the American Red Cross and non-profit organizations like the Give Them a Hand Foundation

Spirit Airlines: Working with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Spirit Airlines will five 5,000 free miles to the first 200,000 registered members who donate at least $5 to UNICEF, the Red Cross, or Yele Haiti.

Southwest Airlines: Southwest has partnered with the Red Cross and has encouraged its employees and customers to donate on an individual basis.

United Airlines: By filling 30 flights full of bottled water, food and other supplies to Port-au-Prince, United has become involved with delivering 50 tons of supplies to victims. Some of its return flights will be even more crucial – they will be filled with Haitian orphans who are now, according to the US government, allowed to enter the United States while the country is in repair. The airline also pledges to match up to $50,000 in contributions made by its employees to the American Red Cross, and flight attendants en route to Haiti will donate their time and work for free. Visit united.com to contribute to the US Agency of International Development, the Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders.

US Airways: Through their Donate Miles page, you can aid the Red Cross through their Miles of Hope program.

Virgin: The Virgin Group, including Virgin America Virgin Atlantic, is contributing by flying medical personnel, agencies, rescue teams and 55 tons of supplies to nearby locations like Miami, Orlando and Jamaica, which will then be transferred by agencies to Haiti. If you’d like to donate through Virgin, explore their Haiti Earthquake fundraiser page via Virgin Unite.
