New travel rules for U.S. attorneys
July 02, 2010

A Carnival cruise ship carrying more than 2,000 passengers lost power Wednesday for several hours and was adrift at sea.

Carnival says the 2,052-passenger Carnival Fascination, which sails out of Jacksonville, Fla., had a "technical malfunction" while on the last leg of a five-day voyage that began on Saturday. Power was restored after several hours and the ship resumed travel to Jacksonville. The line has not specified what type of malfunction occurred.

"All appropriate authorities, including the U.S. Coast Guard, were notified," the line says in a statement. "A marine surveyor boarded the ship at 5 a.m. this morning and inspected the cause of the fault prior to the U.S. Coast Guard clearing the vessel for entry into the Port of Jacksonville." Carnival says the ship will arrive at Jacksonville today around 10 a.m., roughly three hours behind schedule. The line says the delay would have been shorter if not for tidal conditions.

The line says it is offering passengers on the current voyage a 20% discount on a future two- to five-day Carnival cruise as compensation for the hours Wednesday on board without power and the delay. "Carnival sincerely apologizes to our guests for this disruption to their vacation plans," the line says.

Embarkation for the ship's next voyage, a four-day cruise to the Bahamas, will be delayed until 1:30 p.m. today, the line says. The voyage is expected to depart on time at approximately 4 p.m., the line says.

Built in 1994, Carnival Fascination is the fourth oldest of Carnival's 22 ships. It sails year-round from Jacksonville on four- and five-day cruises to the Bahamas and Key West, Fla.
