Fuel prices climb as travel season nears
May 13, 2010

With the summer travel season just around the corner, fuel prices in California are rising, the latest AAA survey find.

Vallejo's average price for a gallon of self-service gas is $3.11, 2 cents more than last month, AAA's Northern California office reported. That's slightly under California's average of $3.15. The national average for unleaded gasoline is now $2.90, a 4-cent increase since last month's AAA survey.

Motorists are paying far more for gasoline this year than last. With the recent increases, California's prices are up nearly 70 cents, said AAA spokesman Matt Skryja.

Lower demand and a weak European currency have kept oil prices from shooting up dramatically, though they are expected to climb the remainder of the month, Skryja said In Northern California, the average price is $3.16 a gallon, up 5 cents from last month. In the San Francisco Bay Area, motorists can expect to pay an average price of $3.23 -- 4 cent over last month's figure.

The average price of gasoline in San Jose and Concord is $3.15 per gallon, while motorists in Oakland pay $3.19 per gallon.

The least expensive average price in Northern California is in Tracy, at $3.05 a gallon.
