British Airways strikes could benefit UK events sector
June 22, 2010

Unite union is expected to hold a ballot on a third round of British Airways strikes, which could be held over a 12-week period from 3 August.

However, Business Visits & Events Partnership chairman Michael Hirst said the possibility of further strikes was "not all negative".

"Any disruption to travel is not helpful," he said. "But at least we know when these strikes are taking place. It is also making quite a lot of UK companies keep their business in the UK, and that is helpful.

"Given it is the third strike, and each strike seems to be less effective, organisers have the ability to know in advance about the disruption and can plan with visiting delegates and speakers.."

The previous round of 20 days of BA cabin crew walkouts fell during Imex week. However, Lufthansa added 20% capacity to its schedule between the UK and Germany to allow for increased demand.

Institute of Travel and Meetings chief executive Paul Tilstone added: "The longer the uncertainty goes on, the more likely corporates are to consider booking other airlines.

There will clearly be some disruption but BA seems to be coping with the strikes pretty well."
