British Airways named airline most likely to lose luggage
June 04, 2010
British Airways is the airline most likely to lose or damage your luggage, research revealed today. In a survey of more than 2,000 recent UK flyers, travel insurer LV= found that one in 3.8 BA passengers has experienced lost, delayed or damaged luggage in the past five years.
Virgin Atlantic was the next worst offender, closely followed by Emirates. Budget airlines EasyJet and Ryanair – who this week increased its baggage charges – rounded off the top five. A spokesperson for BA said the claims made by LV are 'complete rubbish'.
'There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that a quarter of BA passengers have experienced lost or delayed baggage over the last five years,' she added.
LV= also found that a third of all holidaymakers have had luggage lost, stolen or damaged when flying over the last five years.
Meanwhile, only a quarter of passengers received compensation from the airline at fault and the average amount of compensation received was just £72.
John O’Roarke, managing director of LV= travel insurance, said: ‘The fact that a third of all travellers have had their baggage lost or damaged in the last five years is surprisingly high and should come as a warning to holidaymakers’.
‘We’d urge all holidaymakers to label their suitcases properly, and make sure they have appropriate travel insurance in case of any mishaps,’ he added.
The news comes as British Airways revealed passenger numbers were down 14.2% in May, having been hit hard by the latest industrial dispute.
