Air Travel Dropped 5.3 percent in 2009
March 30, 2010
U.S. Bureau of Transportation statistics confirmed Monday what the airline industry already knew: There were fewer people flying in 2009 than in 2008.
According to the government data, domestic airlines and foreign airlines on routes to the U.S. saw a 5.3 percent decline last year from 2008, dropping to 769.6 million passengers. U.S. airlines carried 5.2 percent fewer domestic passengers in 2009 and 6.3 percent fewer international passengers.
Passengers to and from the U.S. on foreign carriers fell 4.8 percent, the agency said.
Demand for air travel declined sharply in the first months of 2009 during the depth of the credit crisis and then gradually stabilized over the rest of the year.
