AAA expects fewer to travel in SC over Christmas

COLUMBIA, S.C. High unemployment and rising gas prices could mean fewer South Carolina residents are traveling this holiday season.
AAA Carolinas says its experts expect more than 1.2 million South Carolinians to get out on the state's highways during the 12-day holiday that begins Dec. 23. That's about 4 percent fewer than last year.
AAA says the drop is partially due to an increase in gas prices. The average gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in South Carolina is 87 cents higher than this time last year.
Air travel is also expected to drop about 6 percent, to 71,000 passengers.
There are also more Palmetto State residents out of jobs this holiday season. Last week, state officials announced that South Carolina's jobless rate had hit a record 12.3 percent.
